Six legal resources to assist women in Ontario

Access to legal resources and information is crucial for women to navigate their rights, address legal challenges and ensure their well-being and safety. It is also important for women to be aware of the legal resources available that work to empower women in their ability to seek justice. 

 In Ontario, several organizations and resources provide legal support specifically tailored to the needs of women. This article will highlight a range of legal resources available in Ontario that empower women by offering guidance, information and support on various legal issues they may encounter. 

Ontario Women’s Justice Network (OWJN) 

The OWJN is an invaluable online resource that provides legal information, resources and support to women across the province. Their website offers comprehensive information on topics such as family law, criminal law, violence against women and human rights. OWJN provides access to legal articles, FAQs, self-help tools and a directory of services available to women in Ontario. 

North York Women’s Centre (NYWC) 

The North York Women’s Centre (NYWC) is a non-profit organization located in Toronto dedicated to empowering women and promoting gender equality. 

The NYWC provides legal information and assistance to women dealing with various legal issues. They offer workshops, referrals and access to legal resources that help women understand their rights and navigate the legal system effectively.

Legal Aid Ontario 

Legal Aid Ontario is a publicly funded organization that provides legal assistance and representation to people who cannot afford a lawyer. They offer a range of services, including legal advice, legal representation and assistance with applications for government programs. Eligible women can access support on a variety of legal matters, such as family law, domestic violence, immigration and criminal law. 

METRAC – The Centre for Women’s Safety and Well-being 

METRAC is a non-profit organization that focuses on empowering women and promoting safety. They provide various legal resources, workshops and educational materials to help women understand their rights and work through legal issues. METRAC’s services cover topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and workplace harassment.

Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic 

The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic is a multi-service organization that offers legal representation and support to women who have experienced violence. They provide free legal advice, counselling and assistance with family law matters, immigration issues and criminal court support. The clinic’s services aim to empower women and help them rebuild their lives after experiencing trauma. 

Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) 

The Ontario Human Rights Commission is responsible for enforcing the Ontario Human Rights Code. They provide information and guidance on human rights issues, including discrimination and harassment based on gender, race, disability and other protected grounds. The OHRC offers resources, publications and legal information to help women understand their rights and take appropriate action when faced with discrimination.
